AIRLIE GARDENS
Airlie Gardens was created in 1901 as a private garden by Jones Pembroke and his wife. This is an area that New Hanover County has become Owner of. This large 27 ha area brings together thousands of azaleas, camellias, magnolias and wisteria in an environment or blends fountains, statues, hiking trails, vast stretches of water and more than centuries old oaks. One is dated 1545. Don't miss Bottle Chapel, a Virginia Wright-Frierson work created in 2004 in memory of the African-American artist Minnie Evans (1892-1987), who lived much of her life in Wilmington and gave more than 400 of his works to the City's Cameron Art Museum.
