CHESNUT COTTAGE B&B
Chesnut Cottage is not only a charming Bed & Breakfast, it is also a historic place in Columbia. This is where Mary and James Chesnut settled throughout the entire Civil War. As Mr. Chesnut was a senior military officer, they received some of the confederate south, including President Jefferson Davis. It is on the porch of this House that the president made his last speech to Confederation. A few months later, Columbia burned under Sherman's advanced. Mrs Chesnut wrote his memoirs on this period: She received the Pulitzer Award posthumously in 1905 for her book A Diary from Dixie. Today, the rooms are very pleasant and the whole cozy though a little too crowded.
