FORT SUMTER NATIONAL MONUMENT
Built in 1829 on a small island in the bay of Charleston, Fort Sumter is of particular historical importance. It was indeed here that the Civil war began on 12 April 1861 when the Confederate soldiers attacked the soldiers of the Union occupying the places. The fort, bombed on all sides, fell 34 hours later without any victim being reported. The war that was going to follow would, however, lead to more than 620 000 deaths. Fort Sumter was besieged throughout the duration of the conflict by the northerners and partially destroyed troops. It was rebuilt at the end of the war and today houses a museum depicting its tumultuous history. You can only travel by boat from Charleston or Mount Pleasant (transport by Fort Sumter Tours). The national park also houses Fort Moultrie, located on Sullivan's Island, facing Fort Sumter. This defensive package was built in 1776 during the war of Independence and can also be visited.
