OLD SLAVE MART MUSEUM
The Old Slave Mart is the last such building in South Carolina. He was part of a complex known as Ryan's Mart and operated from July 1856 to November 1863. While this central building served as a sales hall, three others depended on prison, kitchen and morgue. The latter were destroyed in 1951. Now converted into a museum, the Old Slave Mart traces the history of Charleston as the nerve centre of the plantation economy, and describes with great accuracy the functioning and living conditions of slavery. A shocking return to this human tragedy.
