CENTER FOR CIVILS AND HUMAN RIGHTHS

The National Centre for Civil Rights and Human Rights was conceived by Evelyn Lowery, Civil Rights Defender, and Andrew Young, former United Nations Ambassador, and led by the former Mayor of the city, Shirley Franklin. Established in 2007 on a land given by the Coca-Cola Company, the centre is adjacent to World of Coca-Cola and to the Georgia Aquarium. Its mission is to help visitors better understand the role they play in protecting the rights of all. There are a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions that tell not only the history of the civil rights movement in the United States, but also how this period is linked to more contemporary human rights struggles around the world. In the design of the museum, it was determined that the visitor would be more familiar with current events in Africa or the Middle East than with those of Selma, Alabama, and that the history of civic rights would not be sufficient to maintain such a great project. The museum currently contains three permanent exhibitions: The American Civil Rights Movement, The Global Human Rights Movement and The Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection.
