OLD CAPITOL MUSEUM
The Old Capitol was the theatre of some of the most important legislative acts of the State, such as the adoption of the law on married women's Property in 1839, the separation of Mississippi from the Union in 1861, and the place where the constitutions of 1868 and 1890 were drafted. Built in 1839 by architect William Nichols (1780-1853), he is a perfect example of néogrecque architecture and a rare revival of the Civil war. It was used until 1903, before surrendering the square to the New Capitol and hosting State offices and then the State Historical Museum. He was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. It was restored in 2009 as a museum. Interactive multimedia exhibitions, figurines and numerous documents allow for a very informative visit.
