OHR-O'KEEFE MUSEUM OF ART
George Ohr (1857-1918), a native of Biloxi, was a famous th century artist specializing in pottery. The O'Keefe family is the patron whose donations helped to develop the museum project in 1998. The architectural ensemble is the work of Frank Gehry and Gehry Partners LLP (Los Angeles). The Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art and in fact composed of six separate ensembles on the same site (campus), all interconnected by a central place. Each package offers a different activity or exposure. The Mississippi Sound Welcome Center: it is the reception pavilion; The Gallery of African-American Art: reserved for Afro-American art; the IP Casino Resort Spa Exhibitions Gallery: reserved for temporary exhibitions; the City of Biloxi Center For Ceramics: The center of ceramics, which consists of three levels. Go on the top terrace to admire the ocean view; the John S. and James L. Knight Gallery (The Ipods): a set of 4 related volumes by a gallery, which houses an exhibition of pottery made by George Ohr; The Pleasant Reed Interpretive Center: the revival of a typical th century Gulf Coast house built by a former slave, Pleasant Reed (1854-1936).
On August 29, 2005, while several of these buildings were ready to be inaugurated, a huge casino barge over 200 metres long was moved by Hurricane Katrina and came to crush the structures. The buildings were rebuilt from 2008 onwards and gradually opened from the end of 2010.
