The highest point in the Smoky Mountains and Tennessee National Park, with a spiral walkway and observation tower.
At over 2,000 meters above sea level, the highest point in the Smoky Mountains and Tennessee National Park culminates. It's from the top of a platform, a long spiral walkway leading to an observation tower, that you can admire the pristine peaks of the Smoky Mountains, sometimes steaming, sometimes serene, sometimes completely drowned in mist.
To reach Clingmans Dome, you'll need to turn off Newfound Gap Road and take the road of the same name, which plunges into the forest for almost 10 kilometers and gradually rises in altitude. Once you've parked, leave the visitor center on your right and start the short (but fairly steep) ascent to the viewpoint. If the weather is fine, you'll be well rewarded for your effort. If it isn't, you'll be left to appreciate the misty sea of clouds that blocks your view, but reminds you of where the park gets its name!
