PRISMAS BASÁLTICOS DE SANTA MARÍA REGLA
A natural wonder due to an accelerated cooling of the lava during a volcanic eruption in Huasca de ocampo
The formation of the basaltic stones or prisms of the canyon of Santa María Regla is a natural wonder due to an accelerated cooling of the lava during a volcanic eruption. The basaltic stones are located in the canyon of Santa María Regla and are watered by a waterfall of more than 30 meters high, whose water comes from the Presa San Antonio dam, less than a hundred meters away. As the stones are each in the shape of a column, the ensemble is reminiscent of a church organ. Baron Von Humboldt was so impressed by this spectacle that he made a pencil drawing of it, which is now on display in a London museum.
The visit: the place has been attracting visitors for many years: we enter the site through a typical Mexican tourist complex (invasion of souvenir stores, various restaurants, swimming pool, soccer field, etc.). It's a pity, because we immediately lose the notion of change of scenery, even if the place is very well maintained. The edge of the canyon is nevertheless spared, except for a zip line (a constant from now on) and a nice suspension bridge which is rather pleasant. From there we have a nice view on both sides of the canyon. Once crossed, the bridge opens on a path which allows to observe, much lower, the hacienda Santa Maria Regla. You can also see the Prisms from the bottom of the La Rosa waterfall (less impressive but much wilder).
