ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA DE XOCHICALCO
Archaeological complex known since colonial times, offering a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys
The existence of this archaeological complex has been known since colonial times. The priest Bernardino de Sahagún made a detailed description of it at the end of the 18th century, and the Empress Charlotte, wife of Maximilian of Habsburg, even visited it in the 19th century. However, it was not until the 20th century that Xochicalco was systematically excavated. Catalogued as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, this site offers a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys. The visit of the site is a very beautiful walk on this hill and the course will allow you to discover many structures, but the most spectacular construction is undoubtedly the pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, decorated with bas-reliefs. However, the best part of the visit is buried in the bowels of the Earth, in the Gruta del Sol: from April 30 to August 15, the sun's rays penetrate the cave through an artificial slit and thus mark the stages of the agrarian cycles. Go to the entrance of the cave (below the main square) and follow the guide. Not to be missed during your visit, to have a complete understanding of the place, the Archaeological Museum. It was built on the initiative of the controversial president Salinas, who preceded Zedillo, and is an architectural marvel with its harmonious curved design that blends perfectly into the landscape.
