ZONA ARQUEÓLOGICA DE MONTE ALBÁN
Site built on top of an artificially flattened mountain, with a huge statue that represents Alfonso Caso Andrade
The site is built on top of an artificially flattened mountain, overlooking the surrounding valleys. The views from all sides are spectacular. The complex is distributed around the Gran Plaza (300 metres by 200 metres), with the most imposing buildings at each end: the Plataforma Sur and the Plataforma Norte; on the south side, the Palacio and theEdificio de los Danzantes face each other. TheObservatory, in the prolongation of the central buildings, breaks the relative symmetry of the ensemble due to its very shape and orientation.
At the entrance to the site stands an enormous statue of the Mexican archaeologist Alfonso Caso Andrade, who directed the excavations between 1931 and 1943. He unearthed some 172 tombs, but the Seventh Tomb is best remembered as the guardian of one of the richest treasures ever discovered in Central America: more than two hundred Mixtec works of art in gold, silver, jade, turquoise, crystal, alabaster... All these splendours are now preserved at the Museo de Las Culturas de Oaxaca (inside the Santo Domingo convent). At the entrance of the site, a small museum explains the different stages of the construction and occupation of Monte Alban. To get to the archaeological site of Monte Alban from Oaxaca, you can either take a taxi (this is a good option if there are at least three of you), or take a colectivo, especially those of the Lescas Co Tour agency.
