ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA BONAMPAK
Archaeological area built by progressive leveling and terracing of a hill, with three distinct levels
The archaeological area of Bonampak is accessed through a large rectangular square dominated by the Acropolis, which was built by gradually leveling and terracing a hill, thus giving it three distinct levels. The first level is the most imposing, and contains the famous Edificio de las Pinturas, located on the right. The next level is the one with the largest number of buildings and the last level is the top of the hill (46 meters high), from which you can see the green tide that surrounds the archaeological site. In the middle of the large square is the other curiosity of the site, a stele engraved in a single piece of stone, which is almost 6 meters high. It represents the peak of the reign of Chan Muwan II (also the main subject of the three frescoes in theEdificio de las Pinturas): he is found standing, with the full weight of his cosmic load, supporting a ceremonial staff. His feet are supported by a creature from the underworld, from which the faces of the corn deity emerge. A magnificent visit.
Info: If you wish to visit the site (and its surroundings) with the knowledgeable revelations of a true Lacandon, contact Elías Chambor Yuk (+52 1 916 348 5735), who can be found in the Jaguar Anudado II offices, in the parking lot at the entrance to the site. This will allow you to see the Bonampak site in a whole new light.
