ZONA ARQUEOLOGICA TONINÁ
Site with an original configuration, with a pyramidal structure of 260 steps in Tonina
The configuration of the site is quite original, since its pyramidal structure of 260 steps rises above what was perhaps a hill, dominating a vast central square and the ball court; the result evokes an acropolis that would concentrate all the powers in one place: kings, nobles, priests, astronomers, architects and high-ranking soldiers. This pyramidal structure is organized in seven platforms on which rise no less than thirteen temples and eight palaces, the superposition and modification of many elements over time giving it an air of architectural labyrinth. It is possible to pass through tunnels in its bowels and visit the rooms inside, some of which offer interesting games with the natural light that penetrates through holes in the stone. There are many bas-reliefs carved in stone or in stucco. On the sixth platform there is a fresco representing the cosmic eras, through the dance of the underworld performed by the god of Death, who decapitated the previous suns: "El Mural de los Cuatro Soles". After passing the entrance, you will discover a path. It goes down to a bridge over a stream and leads to a stone staircase that takes you to the first structures. Note that the guides at the top of the stairs offer tours by roundabout ways, allowing you to explore different sides of the site.
