This beautiful Byzantine monastery (Ιερά Μονή Καισαριανής/Irea Moni Kaisarianis) is located 460 m above sea level, within the "aesthetic forest" of Mount Hymette. Dedicated to the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, it was founded around 1100 on the site of a church itself built on an ancient temple. The catholicon houses an 11th-century marble iconostasis and frescoes painted in 1682. The complex also preserves 11th-century buildings, including an ancient bathhouse. It was here that Sultan Mehmed II was handed the keys to Athens in 1458.
