BRAURON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
The oldest sanctuary of Artemis in Attica, founded around 700 BC. Bucolic site, museum and remains of the "Bear" dormitory.
This site (Αρχαιολογικός Χώρος Βραυρώνας/Archaiologikos Choros Vravronas) houses the remains of the Artemis sanctuary of the ancient city of Brauron, near the bay and present-day village of Vravrona (population 260). Situated on the edge of the Erasinos delta, the site is bucolic but sometimes closed due to flooding of the small river. A port connected to the Cyclades and Asia Minor since the Mycenaean period, Brauron was the first place in Attica where the cult of Artemis appeared, around 700 B.C. This development is linked to the myth of Iphigenia: attacked by a bear, Agamemnon's daughter is saved by a young man who kills the beast, provoking the wrath of the goddess of the Hunt and Wild Nature. To make amends, Iphigenia founds here the sanctuary of Artemis, where the young priestesses take the name ofArktoi: the "Bears". A small museum displays the artifacts found here, including beautiful statues of 9-10 year-old bears. The path then skirts reeds and the acropolis. A crack in the rocks was thought to be Iphigenia's tomb. Further on is the Agios Georgios chapel, which served as a hermitage for the Greek saint Timothy of Euripi in the 16th century. Beneath it lies the base of the temple and the sacred spring of Artemis. But the best-preserved ancient building is the stoa of the Arktoi, whose twelve columns have been raised. It was here, in nine dormitories, that the Bears were housed.
