MAKRONISSOS ISLAND
Former prison-island where some 100,000 opponents of right-wing regimes passed through from 1946 to 1958. Access limited but possible.
This "long island" (Μακρόνησος/Makronisos) stretches over 18.4 km2 and 13 km in length between Lavrio and Kea. Now uninhabited, it was a fearsome prison island where around 100,000 opponents of the extreme right-wing regimes passed through from 1946 to 1958, including poet Yannis Ritsos and composer Mikis Theodorakis. Listed as a historical monument, it preserves various buildings and churches from this dark period. Access is restricted, but you can swim on certain beaches by renting a boat or taking an excursion.
