This memorial was erected in honor of the recapture of the city by the Sri Lankan army and its victory over the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), on January 2, 2009 (57th and 58th divisions, special forces). It consists of a gigantic stone cube cracked by a shell and from which a lotus blooms. The cube represents the resistance of the Sri Lankan army to enemy attacks and the lotus represents their faith in peace. The national flag flies above the monument.
