The first battle of Elephant Pass was fought in July 1991. During this battle, LTTE forces directed a tank filled with explosives towards the Sri Lankan army lines. Corporal Gamini Kularatne, who became Sri Lanka's first national hero, paid with his life to stop the device. The memorial that honors him was inaugurated in January 2014. Surrounding the impressive carcass of the tank is a statue of the corporal and a memorial plaque.
