The building was built in 1845 to provide English education for girls. It was first run by an Irish woman before being taken over by the Holy Family Sisters in 1862. The school became the first convent on the island. The school is located in a predominantly Catholic residential area. The students came mainly from the middle and working classes. When it was founded, the school had only 4 teachers and about 100 students. Today it has 76 teachers and over 2,000 students.
