It is the largest Roman Catholic cathedral in Jaffna built at the site of the ancient cathedral dating back to 1789. Although the first stone was laid in 1939, the building was completed only in 1982, after significant architectural changes to minimize costs were decided in 1976. Seriously damaged during the war, it had to be renewed several times. The visit of the website of the Diocese allows to know the progress of the last work on the construction of a rectory.
