This entrance arch of a vanished building is considered by many to be what was the entrance to the palace of the last king of Jaffna, Cankili II. For others, it would be the entrance to the royal gardens located further away. The thesis of the destroyed Dutch colonial building seems the most realistic. The ensemble was covered by a canopy to minimize damage from bad weather. However, no special enhancement has been undertaken. The arch is directly on the kerb and very easily visible when driving past.
