Near the library, towards the ocean, there is a large white column decorated with a cross. At its foot stands a statue. Both were erected in honour of Samuel James Veluppillai (S.J.V.) Chelvanayakam (1898-1977), who was a staunch defender of the rights of the Tamil minority, leader of the ITAK (Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi) or Federal Party, and later of the TULF (Tamil United Liberation Front), and a representative in the parliament of the Kankesanturai District, a former district of the Jaffna peninsula.
