This festival commemorates the arrival of Mahinda, son of the emperor Ashoka, and the introduction of Buddhism in the island in the 3rd century.

This festival commemorates the coming of Mahinda and the introduction of Buddhism in the island. If the celebrations in Anuradhapura are important, the festival of Mihintale is undeniably the most popular on the island. Mihintale Peak, the sacred mountain, is taken by storm by tens of thousands of devotees, mostly dressed in white, as well as curious crowds wishing to participate in the festival, take the huge staircase leading to the Ambasthale Dagoba. Multiple religious ceremonies are organized as well as food donations.
