RAMKUND
Sacred basin dating from the late century, 27 m long and 12 m wide, used to collect the ashes of the dead for moksha
This sacred basin would date from the end of the 17th century. Rama and Sita would have bathed there as thousands of Hindus still do today. 27 meters long and 12 meters wide, it collects the ashes of the dead in order to reach the final liberation of the soul, the moksha. The most famous ashes dumped here are those of Nehru and Indira Gandhi. The Ramkund is also the meeting place for pilgrims during the Kumbh Mela held in Nashik every 12 years. It is one of the 12 places where Shiva is said to have appeared as a pillar of light.
