MURUD-JANJIRA FORT
Spectacular fort built in 1490 on an island off the coast, to be visited by a short boat trip for adults only
This spectacular fort is located on an island off the coast. It was built in 1490, but its ramparts date back to the 16th century. The fort was a small town with many buildings, including a palace and a mosque. Although it is in ruins, many carvings and cannons of the period are still visible. The name Janjira does not come from Hindi, but from the Arabic Jazeera, which means island. Note that the short boat ride to the fort is particularly strenuous, so children and the elderly are not recommended.
