CABRITS NATIONAL PARK
Raised site north of Portsmouth, home to the ruins of Fort Shirley with steel cannons.
North of Portsmouth, in the ruins of Fort Shirley, an 18th century English garrison left steel cannons, which can be found on the raised site. There is also a magnificent view of Prince Rupert's Bay, which is sheltered to the north by Cabrits Point. The name comes from an old habit of sailors who used to release goats there when they landed: their livestock lived there freely until the sailors returned, only too happy to find fresh meat on their next stopover in the area.
