Cathedral Church of Saint Michael and All Angels
Cathedral of St. Michael and All Angels, the full name of this Anglican church, has been in existence since 1665. Destroyed by a hurricane, it was rebuilt in 1789 in Gothic Revival style, then again after the hurricane of 1831, it was elevated to cathedral status in 1825 to become the seat of the Diocese of Barbados and the Lesser Antilles. The church is flanked by a tower with a clock that punctuates the center of Bridgetown by striking every quarter-hour. Its walls are made of coral stone and its wooden ceiling is reminiscent of a ship's hull. The cathedral's interior features three galleries, a carved mahogany cathedra (bishop's seat), a baptismal font dating from 1680 at the west end of the building and a large organ installed in 1924. The stained glass windows are also particularly beautiful, especially the one depicting St. Michael striking down the Beast, surrounded by the coats of arms of Great Britain and the Diocese of Barbados. Although very pretty, the cathedral is in need of renovation.
In the Cathedral cemetery lie Grantley Adams, first Prime Minister before independence, and his son, Tom, also Prime Minister.
In the days of slavery, blacks were not allowed to attend mass at the same time as whites. So they gathered in an alley (you'll find it on Marhill St) from where they could hear the sermons and shout their "Amen". Since then, it has been known as Amen Alley.
