CLIFTON HALL GREAT HOUSE
It was while visiting this corner of the east coast that Italian-Scottish designer Massimo Franchi fell in love with this then derelict Great House. "Because of its marble entrance, which reminded me of Italy," he says. First mentioned in 1656, it was owned by Prince Ferdinand Paleologus, one of the last heirs of the emperors of Byzantium, who named it after his former home in Cornwall. Massimo has restored it and turned it into a luxury B&B, offering the opportunity to sleep in a plantation house, but he also organizes tours.
