An important port on the island, Speightstown was well defended by a number of forts, virtually all of which remain today. These include Fort Orange, Fort Coconut (the Fisherman's Pub is said to have been built against one of its walls), the high Dover Fort and Fort Denmark, which can be reached via a partly fallen road just south of town. The landslide also swept away some of the town's cannons, which are now sadly rusting away. These forts successfully protected the town against the fleet of Sir George Ayscue, sent in 1649 by Cromwell to subdue the Barbadian royalists.
