RUINES DE FORT DENMARK
An important port, Speightstown was well defended by several forts, of which almost nothing remains today. These include Fort Orange, Fort Coconut (the Fisherman's Pub is said to have been built against one of its walls), the high Dover Fort and Fort Denmark, which can be reached via a partly fallen road just south of town. The landslide also swept away some of the town's cannons, which are now sadly rusting away. These forts successfully protected the town against Sir George Ayscue's fleet, sent in 1649 by Cromwell to subdue the Barbadian royalists.
