ABBEY OF SAINT-EVROULT
Former Benedictine abbey at Saint-Evroult, a spiritual Mecca until the French Revolution.
The site features the remains of the former abbey church, now a listed historic monument: porch, nave columns and sections of wall outline its layout. We know the history of the abbey thanks to Ordéric Vital, a 12th-century monk historian. Founded in the 7th century by Evroult, close to the Merovingian power, the Benedictine abbey became a cultural and spiritual Mecca from the 12th century until the French Revolution. An adjoining room provides all the necessary information. Associated with the site is the source of the Charentonne River: the hermitage of Saint-Evroult.
