PARC MARIN ET RÉSERVE DE KISITE-MPUNGUTI
One of the most beautiful natural parks in Kenya and one of the most beautiful excursions to undertake on the coast at Shimoni
Located on Kenya's southern coast, near Shimoni and south of Wasini Island, close to the Tanzanian border, the Kisite Marine Park covers 11 km², while the Mpunguti Reserve covers 28 km². It's one of Kenya's most beautiful marine parks, and one of the best excursions you can make along the coast. The reef, however, is degraded. In the middle of the turquoise water stands out a tiny coral islet surrounded by a small white sand beach. The aquatic world of Kisite-Mpunguti is spread over several islands and includes a beautiful stretch of coral reef, where you can observe a profusion of multicolored fish, simply with fins, mask and snorkel. It's also one of the finest sites on the coast for scuba diving. The best time to dive is from October to March. From June to August, the sea is rough and visibility restricted. Some islands are covered by equatorial forest. It goes without saying that the park is extremely rich in aquatic flora and fauna, the main attraction being its dolphins. Many birds also nest on the islands. You can go boating and diving, coral-watching and picnicking on the beach. Excursions can be organized from many of the region's hotels, including Diani. You can also hire the services of a local boat or sail on a traditional dhow, with many excursions organized from Shimoni.
