SEPILOK ORANGUTAN REHABILITATION CENTER
The Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation center is world-renowned for its exemplary work in protecting primates. It takes in orphans, monkeys held in captivity and the injured. After the necessary care and survival training for the youngest, they are released back into the wild. Unfortunately, some of them cannot be reintegrated and remain at the center. The monkeys are fed twice a day, with bananas and milk. There are almost 200 of them living in the reserve, and they only come when they're hungry. As a result, there is no guarantee of seeing them, and their numbers on the platforms vary from day to day. The center attracts tourists in droves, and almost all of them stop here for at least one night before continuing on to Sipadan, Kinabatangan or Sukau. The nonchalant apes are fed at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and it's best to arrive 30 minutes early to maximize your chances of seeing them from the platforms. Very shy in their natural habitat, it's in Sepilok that you'll have the best chance of seeing them and taking unforgettable photos. The influx of tourists can make the experience somewhat unpleasant, but most only stay about 20 minutes and leave with a smile on their face. So, to enjoy a little more peace and quiet, try to stay until the gates close at 11am or 4pm. Be sure to visit the open-air nursery before you leave.
