TRANSPORTS EN COMMUN
The manx bus network is quite efficient and covers most of the major tourist areas. Douglas' main stop is on Lord Street in the city centre. But Man's particularity lies in its Victorian period electric and steam trains.
Steam train: on the rails from March to November, it is the oldest of the two and certainly the most picturesque. It is picked up at the station at the end of North Quay, from where it travels all over the south of the island through Castletown, Port-St-Mary and Port-Erin. In his 1873 cars, you have to wind your watch a few years to imagine yourself in the company of Sherlock Holmes, as the locomotive runs through the fields. The compartments are intimate, nicely outdated, and you have to talk to your neighbour during the hour of the journey!
Electric train: in service from April to November, it connects the capital to Ramsey in 1h15. You can't miss the Derby Castle terminus, north of the Promenade. Large white letters are fixed on the hill in a Hollywood style. Begun in 1895, the work on the line was completed in only seven months! Today, this completely vintage setting allows you to enjoy the waterfront and reach the top of Snaefell, changing services in Laxey.
Horse tram: don't take it if you're in a hurry, it takes 20 minutes to go 2.6 km! But that's not his charm.... Born in 1876, it is one of the oldest trams still towed by a horse in the world. It circulates throughout Douglas Bay between May and September (www.douglashorsetramway.im).
