THE QUARRY OF THE VAUX
Within the Armorican Massif, this is a quasi-unique geological feature. In its greenery, this small quarry whose gray marble was extracted from the late nineteenth century is the witness of a rare, very hard limestone of 445 million years. This limestone deposit, which only has an equivalent in Crozon Peninsula, is also remarkable to contain tiny fossils of conodont, which is now extinct and first known fossil vertebrate. Invisible to the naked eye, these fossils make it possible to date rock, rebuild the geography and living environments of these distant times. These fossils are the revelators of the previously temperate sea like the Mediterranean. Acquired by the Normandie-Maine Regional Natural Park in 2009, the site has been classified as a Regional Nature Reserve. With its 0.32 ha, it is the smallest natural reserve in France. Scientists are looking at the mystery of his presence here. Visits are regularly organized by the Park.
