Nossa Senora da Expectação was built in place of another church inside the castle to accommodate the faithful.
Its size makes it an imposing landmark in the heart of the historic center. During the reign of D. Sebastião (1557-1578), Nossa Senora da Expectação (Our Lady of Hope) was built in place of a smaller church inside the castle, to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. Its sober lines are typical of Mannerist architecture. The Capella dos Ossos is located on the south side of the church, and bears the warning: "We, the bones that are here, await yours...".
