CAPELA DOS OSSOS
This chapel of bones is composed of the bones of the victims of the explosion that destroyed a nearby warehouse in 1732.
We don't know whether to laugh or shudder... This chapel of bones is perhaps even more astonishing than its regional counterparts. For this one is made up of the bones of the victims of the explosion that destroyed a nearby warehouse in 1732. Nearly 800 people were killed: it's their bones, jumbled together, that line the walls and ceiling of this horrific, fateful yet remarkable chapel. If you missed the one in Evora, you can make up for it here. It's the second largest chapel of its kind in Portugal.
