GOVINDARAJA TEMPLE
Tirupati's oldest and one of its largest shrines, located in the heart of the city center and featuring an imposing gopuram
Located in the heart of the city center, the Sri Govindarajaswamy Temple is the oldest sanctuary of Tirupati and also one of the largest. Of Dravidian architecture, it counts in particular an imposing gopuram (door of entry). Consecrated in 1130, some of its structures date however from the 9th and 10th centuries. The city of Tirupati developed around this temple dedicated to Vishnu in the form of Govindaraja. The idol is depicted here in a reclining position with one hand under his head and the two wives of Vishnu, Sridevi and Bhudevi, sitting at his feet.
