VEDANARAYANA TEMPLE
Temple built in memory of Krishnadevaraya's mother and originating from the battle between Vishnu incarnated as a fish and Somaka
The Vedanarayana temple would have been built by Krishnadevaraya, emperor Vijayanagar, in memory of his mother Nagamba. The name of the temple comes from the battle between Vishnu incarnated in Matsyavathara (a fish) and Somaka who tried to seize the Vedas, the sacred texts of Hinduism. The war took place here. The idol placed in the main sanctuary represents Vishnu surrounded by his two wives, Bhudevi and Sridevi, and with a fish at his feet. At the festival of the sun, in March, a very important festival takes place.
