WESTERN MEBON
Western Mebon, built during the reign of Udayâdityavarman II in the center of the artificial lake, with its typical gopura or towers to be seen
The 8 by 2 kilometers expanse of water which is in fact the largest bârây ever built by the Khmers, is a vast artificial lake dug to irrigate the rice fields, to serve as a reserve for fish, and as a place of distraction for the people. In the center, the Mebon would have been built under the reign of king Udayadityavarman II. This sanctuary of which there is not much left, except for the gopura, typical towers of the Dravidian architecture of South India, was composed of a large basin of a hundred meters long, with a terrace in the middle.
