HERO'S GARDEN
This garden is home to the graves of the defenders of Missolonghi (1821-1826), 63 monuments and a section of the ancient ramparts.
This 3.7-hectare garden (Κήπος των Ηρώων/Kipos ton Iroon) is home to the cemetery of the defenders of Missolonghi who died during the sieges of 1821-1826. There are 63 monuments: the statue of English poet Lord Byron, who died here in 1824, the tomb of general Markos Botzaris, created by sculptor David d'Angers in 1827, as well as steles in honor of French, Swedish and American philhellenes... The northern part is bordered by the ramparts where the defenders chose to blow themselves up rather than surrender, on April 10, 1826.
