ROUSSANOU MONASTERY
Female monastery of Meteora. Beautiful views. Original frescoes no longer extant and ecclesiastical museum of little interest. Unesco.
This women's monastery (Ιερά Μονή Ρουσάνου/Iera Moni Rousanou) is especially noteworthy for its views and for its access via a footbridge over the void. Perched on a low (60 m) but impressive peak, which was probably occupied by a monk named Roussanos in the 14th century, it was founded in 1545 to house a relic of Saint Barbara. Long neglected, it was restored in 1980. Recent frescoes include the tortures inflicted on the martyrs. Beautiful views of the monasteries of Agios Nikolaos and Varlaam.
