The Brandaris lighthouse is an emblematic symbol of the island of Terschelling, recognized by locals and visitors alike. This majestic brick lighthouse, visible from afar, is the oldest lighthouse still in operation in the Netherlands. Named after Saint Brandarius, it was built to help distinguish the islands, which look very similar from afar. The current lighthouse, erected in 1594, replaced an earlier structure that collapsed in 1570. In 1977, it was modernized with the addition of an elevator, and its light is now fully automated.
