LIBRARY THYSIANA
Library that perfectly sums up Leiden's situation as a pioneer and highly literate city
This library perfectly sums up the situation of Leiden as a pioneer and highly literate city. It was bequeathed by Mr. Johannes Thysius who wanted to make it a place of study, inspired by humanism. Originally consisting of 2,500 books, it is sporadically supplemented in a thoughtful way. The library is also open on Heritage Days. The building dates from 1655 and is the work of Arent van 's-Gravensande, built in a classical style. It is the only building from the 17th century that was built as a library.
