ACADEMIEGEBOUW
A building still used for presentations and graduations in Leiden
This is the headquarters of the university, which has been housed since the 16th century in a former church of the Dominican nuns' monastery. The building, which dates back to 1516, is still used for inaugural lectures and graduations. It's customary for students to write their names on the wall of the zweetkamer, the sweat room, where they wait nervously before hearing their name signifying graduation. The stained glass windows depict the history of the university.
