RENÉ DESCARTES HOUSE
The house where René Descartes lived around 1640, which can be admired from the outside in Leiden
If France prides itself on being the land of the Enlightenment, let's never forget that it was in the Netherlands that great thinkers and theologians found refuge at a time when it wasn't so easy to think and publish freely. It was in this house that René Descartes lived around 1640, and it's a house that can't be visited, but can be admired from the outside. A plaque commemorates its illustrious occupant. Rapenburg was once considered the prettiest street in the Netherlands. The building was recently sold for a very handsome sum.
