The only two remaining gates with national monument status in Leiden
Two entrance gates are visible here. There used to be more than ten! The other eight were destroyed in the 19th century when the town was enlarged. The Morspoort is the city's western gate and was built in 1669, while the Zijlpoort, or north-eastern gate, was built in 1667. The former is the work of Willem van der Helm and was used as a prison for many years. These are the only two surviving gates, and have national monument status. A barracks was built in the early 19th century, housing the infantry until 1940.
