MUSEUM DE LAKENHAL
Municipal museum in Leiden, which traces the city's glorious past and its flourishing activities
Leiden's Municipal Museum is housed in the city's former 1640 Cloth Hall, designed by Arent van 's Gravesande. The historical collection, on the second floor, traces the city's glorious past and flourishing activities (between 1640 and 1800), illustrated by paintings by Isaac van Swanenburgh (father of Jacob, Rembrandt's master), explaining the phases of wool production. The museum also exhibits 17th-century paintings by Rembrandt, Jan Steen and Gerard Dou, among others.
