HAFF REIMECH NATURE RESERVE
The Haff Réimech nature reserve is the largest wetland in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It occupies 80 ha of the 280 ha of the surrounding former gravel pit area, and was classified as a "nature reserve" in 1998 and declared a "Natura 2000 area" in 2007. The biotope is made up of marshy areas and around thirty ponds, mostly bordered by reed beds. A 4 km nature trail and three observatories offer many opportunities to observe the reserve's flora and fauna.
The reserve is of great ornithological interest, as certain species, such as the Penduline Warbler, the Little Bittern and the Red-winged Warbler, nest only on this site. Observations can be made all year round, although summer is the quietest period. In spring, the site is home to around 80 species, including great crested grebe, hobby falcon and scaup. In autumn, during the migratory period, the site is home to osprey, tufted duck, great egret, little egret, purple heron and over 20 species of wader. In winter, the reserve is home to common snipe, common merganser, bittern and, more exceptionally, red-throated and arctic loons.
The nature reserve can be explored on various guided walks organized from the Biodiversum. Themes include "Grand ou petit tour", "Rencontres magiques", "Les oiseaux" and "La végétation".
