MOUNT VARZIN

For those who would be discouraged by the hordes of tourists on the Tavurvur, the East New Britain Tourist Office has opened a new circuit on Mount Varzin, which is much less popular. Located an hour's drive south of Kokopo, the ascent takes just one hour for experienced walkers. If you prefer to stroll along the way, two hours will be more than enough to reach the summit, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of Rabaul Bay. For history lovers, there are many remains of the Second World War to visit: fighter aircraft carcasses, tunnels built by the Japanese, etc.
