FIRE CONTROL TOWER N°23
The Delaware River flows into the ocean in Cape May. The merchant ships therefore go back to the Philadelphia region. During the Second World War, they were targeted by the German submarines who were dropping regularly. The tower was built in 3 days in June 1942 to better identify them. Cape May was already a military base with coastguards and an airport hosting a training camp for pilots.
Many panels and photos explain precisely the function of this observation post, which became a museum, before you climb up a narrow spiral staircase.
